Album out now: ‘Requiem for Myself’ by Weinf

Described as an ‘unintentional concept album’, the new LP from independent Barcelona based songwriter Weinf is certainly an album constructed around a theme. All ten songs, written soon after Weinf was given a cancer diagnosis by his doctor, deal with many of the issues and hardships you would expect given the circumstances.

What this album offers then is an insider’s perspective of dealing with that level of uncertainty over your future. By channelling the experience into these songs, you can only hope that they served as a kind of therapy. They definitely come across that way, thanks to the poignant lyrics and smart interplay between vocals and guitar.

Thankfully, the album – out now – can now be looked at as the document of a survivor (Weinf looks likely to receive a clean bill of health very soon). But, written at a time when things were less certain, this is a compelling and interesting piece.
